With the quick approach of the holiday season, what better time to think about gifts for your loved ones? These occupational therapy inspired ideas are great for all and can help your loved ones stay safe, healthy, and active into the new year!
Gifts to Help with Dressing:
Long handled shoehorn:
A standard size or long handled shoehorn can be great for putting on shoes without having to bend down, helpful for those who have limitations or discomfort with bending. EXAMPLE
Slip in shoes:
Slip in shoes have increased exponentially in popularity and availability. There are a variety of brands to choose from, but the unifying factor is that the back of the shoe is reinforced to create a sort of integrated shoehorn and stand up to the pressure of pushing down on the heel. Gifts for the Bath:
Long handled loofah:
Switching out your loofah, sponge, or washcloth frequently is recommended to mitigate bacterial growth, and why not replace it with a long-handled version! This can be great to reach your back or feet, anywhere where it may typically be difficult to reach. EXAMPLE
Nonskid bath Insert:
It is estimated that 80% of falls in the home occur in the bathroom. Of those falls, 66% occur while in or getting into the shower/tub. Nonskid strips like the ones pictured can be great at reducing the risk of slipping in the tub. Paired with properly placed wall mounted grab bars, inserts are a recipe for success and safety! Your occupational therapist is a great resource to help determine the best placement for your grab bars and other safety equipment in the bath and throughout your home. EXAMPLE

Jar opener:
There are so many different devices that make opening jars or containers easier. Household members of all ages can use them to open items with ease! They are especially helpful for those with reduced grip strength or arthritis. EXAMPLE 1 EXAMPLE 2 EXAMPLE 3
Electric can opener:
Another device that incorporates the principles of universal design and can be used by all household members is an electric can opener. This is an effortless way to open cans with the push of a button. There are freestanding and handheld versions to meet a variety of preferences. EXAMPLE
Dycem:
Dycem has been used by therapists for years to reduce skidding and provide more grip for clients and equipment. Dycem is a great nonstick material that can be used in many ways around the house. In the kitchen it can be used to stabilize cutting mats or plates. EXAMPLE
Gifts for Around the House:
Reacher:
A reacher is great to pick up items from the floor, from high cabinets, or far away surfaces. Loved ones who have limitations with bending, reaching overhead, or who are incorporating principles of energy conservation may find this helpful. Kids also love them! EXAMPLE
Motion sensor night light:
When getting out of bed throughout the night to use the bathroom, it is important to have adequate lighting to reduce the risk of falling. A motion sensor night light is helpful to have an additional source of light for moving while not having constant light which could impair sleep quality. EXAMPLE
Motion sensor lights:
In the same theme of providing adequate lighting, stick-on motion sensor lights are helpful in closets, garages, or under cabinets to have task lighting when getting items or completing projects. EXAMPLE
Occupational Therapist or Handyman home safety consultation:
A consultation from a Certified Aging in Place specialist or handyman is a great gift for loved ones whose goal it is to age in place in their home. These trained specialists offer tips, advice, and recommendations to make the home safe and accessible. If you are unable to locate a certified contractor your occupational therapist can perform a home evaluation and work with you and the general contractor to make your home safe. Leisure Gifts:
Puzzles:
Puzzles, games, and other activities are a wonderful way to help yourself or loved ones stay mentally and physically active into the near year. They also promote fun for the whole family and offer great socialization opportunities. Brands like Lego have a wide variety of building sets for adults with themes like plants and architecture.
Card holder:
A playing card holder is a great option for folks with low grip strength or anyone who wants to be hands free while playing games. EXAMPLE
Lighted magnifying glass :
Keeping a lighted magnifying glass around the house is a great option for those with low vision. They are helpful for reading, writing, bill paying, and more! EXAMPLE
Reading glasses:
Who among us has not lost a pair of reading glasses? A multipack of readers may be the thing to ensure that you or your loved one can read what they need in each room of the house, whether that is the kitchen, living room, bedroom, or elsewhere. EXAMPLE
Rec center passes:
Check out your local senior center to see if they offer passes to group exercise, educational, and leisure classes.
