We are excited to team up with one of our clients in this blog. Marcia loves to travel and as a person with Parkinson’s she realized she has different things to consider when traveling with a movement disorder. Marcia has dug into researching various resources available to help make travelling easier for people with Parkinson’s and other mobility limitations. We hope you find this interesting and informative. If you have questions or have a topic you would be interested in contributing about, please let us know.

This month, we are initiating a new feature on travel for those with disabilities, starting with accessibleGO.com, an extremely informative, easy-to-navigate, comprehensive online site for disability travel in major U.S. cities.
The accessibleGO community is where travelers with accessibility needs gather to make new friends while they share tips, recommendations, and resources. Every day there are great conversations, and each week some favorite highlights are shared. One important feature of this site is that it contains links to dozens of U.S. cities which include: top 10 accessible attractions; top 10 accessible hotels; 48-hour itinerary, and relevant forum posts. Other attractions are also listed, all with specifics on disability access.
Other topics on this site for each city - all targeted for the handicapped community - include: equipment rental, transportation, tour companies, caregivers, maps, hotels. travel ideas, and city guides. The site’s travel blog is - as one would think - written by disabled people who offer excellent tips from personal experience with successful travel, in or outside of the U.S.
Marcia plans to provide additional blogs exploring more accessible travel resources so make sure to subscribe to our monthly newsletter.
If you are planning to travel this Spring or Summer, we encourage you to schedule a “travel preparedness assessment” with one of our physical or occupational therapists. They can perform an evaluation and then provide you with a plan to address any balance, mobility, endurance, or strength issues that may limit you on your travels so that you can be “Ship Shape” (pun intended :-)
