Lymphedema Therapy and How it Helps

By: LariJean Estrada-Brooks PT, DPT, CLT and Karla Merola, LPTA, CLT

Lymphedema is the chronic swelling of a body part due to decreased lymphatic system function. According to the latest survey, this condition affects approximately 10 million people in the U.S. alone (Lymphaticnetwork.org, 2022). The disease can result in skin changes, increased chance of infection, reduced movement, and discomfort in the affected limb. Although chronic, programs are available to help limit progression and reduce effects.

Our amazing lymphedema team has over ten years of combined experience as Certified Lymphedema Therapists (CLTs). Treatments are designed based on the most updated evidence-informed guidelines on managing both primary and secondary types of Lymphedemas that include other pre-existing vascular conditions.

The streamlined process of managing Lymphedema is as follows:

Lymphedema Evaluation:

On the initial visit, the Patient will be assessed and will have specific Lymphedema special tests and measurements that will help address the client's chief complaints. The CLT team at Virginian Rehabilitation and Wellness will promote the Complete Decongestive Therapy or CDT approach that provides special techniques such as MLD and Multi-layer Bandaging.

Home Exercise Program creation:

Our therapists train patients in proper maintenance techniques, including skin care (to guard against infection and improve skin quality), positioning, self MLD, and exercises to strengthen muscle pump action in order to promote better lymphatic flow.

Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD):

By performing this specialized manual technique with appropriate pressure and direction, our clinicians can help move lymphatic fluid and reduce the size of the affected body part.

Compression bandaging:

Skilled application of short stretch compression bandaging will help the further movement of lymphatic fluid and decrease limb girth.

Assist with Compression Pump acquisition:

In some cases, a pneumatic compression pump is recommended for home use. Although not as good as therapist-delivered MLD, this device helps move fluid from congested limbs and is an excellent alternative to home self MLD, especially on lower extremities.

Garment Recommendations:

Once affected body parts have been reduced, clients can start the transition from compression bandaging to garments. Our therapists can recommend an appropriate style and level to fit our client's needs and take circumferential measurements to ensure proper fit.
